2017 Syrah

Our 2017 Syrah shows all of the hallmarks of a warm summer’s portion of the growing season in the Yorkville Highlands: abundant fruit and flavor concentration coupled with bright, balancing acidity provided by chilly nighttime temperatures. The aromas display a burst of blue and black fruits right out of the bottle, rounded out by Syrah’s typical earthy- violet notes. On the palate, the wine opens with plum and blackberry flavors that evolve, with aeration, into the classic blueberry, bacon fat, and white pepper we expect to see. The addition of 2% Yorkville Petite Sirah adds a nice touch of “grit” to the complex palate.

Vineyard Notes

2017 was a tale of two growing seasons. We started the year with a flood that saturated vineyards and led to a late spring. But all worries of a later vintage vanished with the warm summer. 2017 was harvested at a close-to-normal date, with resulting ripe fruit flavors. In the last 20 years, only 2007 and 2015 had more heat accumulation than 2017. The year will also be remembered for the wine country fires. While devastating to our communities, the wines were not affected, since harvest was completed before the fires occurred.

Winemaker Notes

The grapes were harvested early in the morning, then brought to the winery and hand- sorted. They were destemmed into half ton inventors and allowed to cold soak for a week, punched down twice a day during that period. Once inoculated, punch downs continued until the wine was pressed a few days before fermentation completed. Once primary fermentation ended, the Pinot was transferred to barrel and stirred once a month until malolactic fermentation was complete. The wine not found to need any fining and was bottled nine months later.
