Tasting Notes
Yikes! This is a big, dark, brooding wine. Then again, when you combine old vines on a steep slope at 2000 feet in a late harvest of a particularly robust variety that is what you expect to get. Right out of the bottle, deep, rich aromas of black cherries, a plum galette, and licorice combine with the complex aromas of violets, cedar, nutmeg, and vanilla. Two and a half years in barrel have added some heft to the tannic framework. Please decant and allow this wine to build to its full potential. Will pair beautifully with a robust dish such as Osso Bucco with a side of Forbidden Rice.Vineyard Designation
Summerwind VineyardVineyard Notes
2019 was fashionably late to the party. We had late rain in the Spring which saturated the soils and slowed bud break. Vigorous shoot growth early in the Summer initially suggested we would get back on schedule, but we settled in for a long cool summer. These late vintages make winemakers very nervous because rain can loom in late October. The Fall stayed remarkably dry and all the grapes were picked and even fermented before the first storms. 2019 saw some of the longest hang times in memory. That extra time on the vine developed grapes bursting with flavor that are a joy to drink young.Winemaker Notes
The fruit cold-soaked for 24-hours and was inoculated with yeast the next morning. Pumping over the Petite was adjusted in duration and frequency, depending on taste and yeast activity (one to three times per day). The ferment was pressed off between at 2 Brix. Once dry, the wine was racked off lees and inoculated for malolactic fermentation. MLF was done in tank and barrel, and upon completion, racked into barrel for 20 months.Awards
